In 2001, the Prix Ars Electronica’s Internet category was fundamentally reconceived to take into account the thrust of innovation and creativity online and retitled Net Vision /Net Excellence. Net Vision encompasses projects that are characterized above all by their forward-looking, innovative way of dealing with the online medium. Net Excellence is a forum for projects that are outstanding in the originality of their content and their creative use of leading-edge applications. Prizes included one Golden Nica, two Awards of Distinction and a total of 16 Honorary Mentions. In the Computer Animation / Visual Effects category, the prizes were cut back to one Golden Nica, two Awards of Distinction and 12 Honorary Mentions since the dividing line between computer animation and visual effects was unclear. The other 2001 Prix Ars Electronica categories were Interactive Art, Digital Musics and cybergeneration – u19 freestyle computing.
