Prix Ars Electronica

ORF Oberösterreich

The Computer Music Jury of Prix Ars Electronica 88 is happy to announce its decision to award the Golden Nica to the New Zealand composer Denis Smalley for his piece "Clarinet Threads" for clarinet and computer generated tape, which is a good example of craftmanship and mastering in "musique concrete" on the computer.

Furthermore, the jury has awarded two Distinctions to two composers for computer generated tapes:

One Distinction goes to the British composer Trevor Wishart for his very original work on timbral transformations, "VOX-5", the other to the Polish composer Barbara Zawadzka for her poetic work "Greya" which makes remarkable use of limited technical ressources.

The jury's selection raffirms that quality works do not necessarily belong to any specific form or aesthetics. From the very large spectrum of entries - in terms of countries of origin as well as genres and styles - the jury furthermore chose seven Honorary Mentions.
