solarCity
"solarCity" is an ambitious project being developed in an outlying area of Linz according to the latest findings and insights in the field of urban planning. An application created at the Ars Electronica Futurelab enables CAVE users to visualize the city planners’ concept and thus provides a basis for discussion of subsequent developmental phases. The model depicting solarCity’s layout makes it possible for everyone involved to have input into the planning of the new neighborhood. As a spin-off of its 1999 terrain visualization project, the Ars Electronica Futurelab was commissioned to develop an application that would enable CAVE users to fully experience the planned neighborhood. To accomplish this, a highly detailed model of several public facilities and the core of the new neighborhood was created and depicted as a walk-through building in the CAVE. On the basis of this model, urban planners and potential residents can experience the atmosphere and functionality of the future development today. This urban construction project quickly garnered international recognition, including a development subsidy from the European Union and awards from the United Nations and the Earth Society Foundation. solarCity is well on its way to becoming a model for future-oriented urban development in Europe. From its groundbreaking ceremony to the presentation of front-door keys to residents, solarCity is being built in record time. With construction already having commenced in March 2001, a total of 1,400 residential units will be built in four phases set for completion in October 2005.
