Long Night of Research

New technologies in the zone of impact where opportunity meets risk—the Ars Electronica Center will address the highly topical issue of security and surveillance on October 1, 2005.

Installations adapted especially for this event and several interesting speakers will be updating attendees about state-of-the-art technologies that are helping to make our lives safer, while also pointing out the hazards inherent in these advances.

For example, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chips that can be installed in all sorts of products make it possible to access information via radio. The positive utilization possibilities in business, R&D and the health care system have to be weighed against potentially detrimental consequences in the private sphere due to the possibilities of data transfer and data interpretation.

The “Long Night of Research” begins at 5 PM in the Ars Electronica Center. Every hour on the hour, there will be guided tours through the Museum of the Future and (beginning at 6) through the Ars Electronica Futurelab.

The SKY Media Loft will host a musical encounter involving Linz and Vilnius, the two cities that will be European Capitals of Culture in 2009. Stork & Frejlach, the Linz School of Music’s klezmer band, will perform at 9 PM, followed by the Skirmantas Sasnauskas Band from Lithuania at 10:30.

There will be shuttle busses departing at regular intervals from the “Treffpunkt Forschung” meeting place on the Hauptplatz (Main Square) to transport attendees to the various venues. In addition to the Ars Electronica Center, other institutions participating in the “Long Night of Research” in Linz are the Johannes Kepler University of Linz, the University of Art and Industrial Design, Techcenter Linz, voestalpine Stahl AG, Linz AG, study programs at technical colleges in the Province of Upper Austria and the Austrian Center for Alternative Methods to Animal Testing.

Admission is €6. Club Ö1, Standard and Raiffeisen Club members as well as all others entitled to a discount pay €4. Youngsters age 12 and under are admitted free of charge.
