Atama Yama: Auszeichnung Computer Animation / Visual Effects
The short film Atama Yama ("Mt. Head") by Koji Yamamura (J) is a modern interpretation of the traditional comic tale packed with black humor. Koji Yamamura's animation was a nominee for the 2003 Academy Award in the Animated Short category. After a stingy man eats some cherry seeds, a cherry tree grows on his head and he gets into a lot of trouble. The animated film Mt. Head is a modern interpretation of the traditional Japanese Rakugo story "AtamaYama" set in contemporary Tokyo. The story draws to an end, overwhelming the audience with an accumulation of cuts filled with information. The drawing style is sophisticated, yet the ambience and story are pure Japanese. Accompanied by a shamisen (Japanese strings), a voice chants the story of a man so stingy, so inside his own head, that he destroys himself. The cherry blossom festival, happening on top of the man’s head, is surreal and unforgettable. Koji Yamamura, born 1964, made his first animation film in 1977 at the age of 13. Ten years later he graduated from Tokyo Zokei University. His works have been shown in 30 countries and awarded various honorable prizes. His retrospective screenings were held in Toronto, Seoul, Paris, Girona etc. He is a member of the board of directors of the Japan Animation Association (JAA) and member of the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA).
