Steve Rogers on the Net Vision / Net Excellence Jury

You are the head of BBC New Media. What is the focus of this BBC department?

Steve Rogers: BBC New Media is responsible for the development of new media services for the benefit of the UK license fee payers. These services are on Web and interactive TV platforms as well as broadband and mobile web.

Interactive TV has been announced some years ago already, but it did not seem to really get off. Now that the web has introduced millions of users to interactivity, is there more chance for interactive TV?

In the UK Interactive TV is already significant presence, largely due to the take up of Digital Satellite. The BBC has a very rich 24/7 interactive service including video loops of recent headline stories. We are at the forefront of exploring the use of interactive applications to enrich the linear TV experience through products such as "Walking with Beasts" which gave in depth information to the programme as well as offering the opportunity to have a dramatised or scientific narration. We are investigating the opportunities that a return path gives us.

What will be the really new thing in digital programming? How will this influence the genres?

Steve Rogers: A true and rich return path will give us the next step in interactive TV, allowing the introduction of peer to peer functionality into iTV.

Which big trends do you see for the near future in "New Media"? What seems the most exciting thing for you?

Steve Rogers: The real growth in community in New Media is what is exciting, the way that established companies and brands, such as ours, are changing their relationship with their users as the community grows in strength and most importantly grows in diversity.

As to Prix Ars Electronica: What are your expectations as to the submitted works? Which criteria must apply to a project worth of a Golden Nica in Net Vision and Net Excellence?

Steve Rogers: I expect that for a project to be worthy of a Golden Nica, it will of course have excellent presentation, of course excel in navigation and ease of use, but, more than that today I expect it to understand, reflect and support it's users. I expect it to demonstrate that it has reached the same level of maturity as the medium.

Your favourite websites?

Steve Rogers: The BBC Homepage: it provides me with a perfect entry point for most things I'm looking for.

Ebay, yes it's and auction site, yes it's addictive, but most of all it is a great example of a community site growing around a context.

Kfog because it allows me to travel back to California during the wet UK weather!
