electrolobby – media ad hoc
The electrolobby remains dedicated to encounters with forms of art and expression that have emerged as spin-offs of digital media.

Set up in the lobby of the Brucknerhaus, it becomes the festival’s vital hub. In contrast to exhibition spaces, it’s an open forum for all aspects of designing digital art and mediating the encounter with it.

In 2004, the focus will be on the artistic appropriation of and intervention into the frequency spectrums and bodies of regulations governing communication technologies ranging from radio, TV, telephone and the Internet all the way to WiFi and location based services. These public and social media spaces are regarded by many artists as both the material and the theme of their work. Eliminating hierarchies of transmitter and receiver, setting up infrastructure and opening up access to its use are a few of the ongoing aims.

In light of this year’s overall festival theme, a second area of emphasis will be the history of artistic communications projects, whereby the spotlight will be on an art form that is widely considered a model worthy of emulation: radio art, which has played an important role at Ars Electronica through the many projects produced since 1987 by the Austrian Broadcasting Company’s Kunstradio. The Prix Ars Electronica’s new emphasis on digital communities will also manifest itself in the electrolobby.
