Ars Electronica Highlights (September, 2)
The first day of Ars Electronica 2004 kicks off with a series of openings and a big party in the park atop Freinberg.

“Linz Writes Its Future” will be launched at 5 PM on the Main Square (Hauptplatz) and will run until September 6th. All festivalgoers are invited to take part in coming up with designs for the future of the city up to the year 2029. These futuristic visions can be submitted to the FutureBoard by e-mail, post, fax or in person. A public vote will determine the best contributions to “Linz +25,” Michael Naimark’s interactive calendar for future prognoses. At “Future Me,” anyone can send an e-mail into the future—addressed to themselves.

On the occasion of Ars Electronica’s 25th anniversary, Lentos will present a media art retrospective. “Digital Avant-Garde / Prix Selection” showcasing prizewinning works from the Prix Ars Electronica over recent years will be on display at the museum from September 3 to October 4, 2004. On September 2nd from 11 AM to 1:30 PM, the Digital Avant-Garde - Media Art Forum will provide an opportunity for artists represented in the Lentos exhibition to discuss conceptual aspects of working with interactive media.

Linz’s University of Art is hosting “Campus.” This year’s guest is IAMAS, a Japanese college represented by an extensive exhibition of student works, a documentation of the institution’s biannual media arts festival and work that has emerged from its own Artist-in-Residence Program. The vernissage is set for 4 PM.

During the Festival, “Australian Media Art” will be on display at Architekturforum Oberösterreich. Among this exhibition’s featured installations are “Fish Bird” and “Life Signs.”

After sundown, Linz’s Freinberg will be the site of major festivities. Live performances, concerts, sound installations and one-of-a-kind action cooking by Gordon W’s Scharfness Institute will make this night an experience for all the senses. Nature becomes a part of the artistic concept, torches and candles illuminate the way, and hammocks strung between trees invite visitors to relax and enjoy the sound landscape.
