Giant multi-legged critters will populate Linz’s Main Square when Theo Jansen exhibits his "Strandbeests" in September.
Theo Jansen and Ulf Langheinrich will share the spotlight as the 2005 festival’s "Featured Artists.” Jansen has been singled out for recognition with a Prix Ars Electronica Special Jury Prize for his "beach beasts," giant animal-like creations made of wood and plastic tubes whose movements are fed by the wind. Two of his artworks will be on display in Linz, and the artist will also deliver an address explaining the construction mechanisms of his “creatures” and how they function.
Ulf Langheinrich will present an audiovisual performance entitled "DRIFT – live version" as well as an installation: in "Waveform B," two exhibition spaces are constructed and outfitted symmetrically, but projections and stroboscopic effects within them confront visitors to each with radically different spatial impressions. In the artist’s words, the spaces are in “constant oscillation.”
In his address, Langheinrich will go into the technical background, aesthetic approaches and artistic intentions of his projects.
