The concept of a synesthetic linkage of sound and image is a constantly recurring motif in artistic work, and the current possibilities afforded by computer technology provide a fascinating tool to implement this concept. Independent of one another, Masaki Fujihata and Golan Levin began dealing with this problem and developing remarkable, promising solutions. Ars Electronica invited the two artists to conduct the premiere of their installations and software modules as digital media instruments in a concert performance.

“Scribble” combines elements of graphic and music software in a dynamic and highly expressive way, and provides the artist-musician quartet with the possibility of performing both composed and freely improvised music.
“Small Fish Tale” actually resembles an interactive image that produces music, and was utilized on this particular evening as a digital instrument to give an unusual concert.

The “Active Score Music” DVD documents the September 5, 2000 performance that was on the program of the Ars Electronica Festival. It was produced by the Ars Electronica Futurelab in cooperation with the Austrian Broadcasting Company’s Upper Austria Regional Studio.
