Wanted: Innovative Ideas and Creative Minds! Bringing innovativeness and creativity to state-of-the-art technology is what the future is all about, and one important contribution to this is nurturing young talent. In this spirit, the Prix Ars Electronica presents its new art and technology grant—[the next idea].
Great ideas and pioneering achievements are often the work of young innovators who can break out of the strictures of conformity to tried-and-true formulas and bring fresh perspectives to a problem. But it is precisely this group of creative minds who are usually least able to implement their concepts because they lack contacts, financing and experience in project development and organization.
This was the Ars Electronica Center’s motivation in launching a new competition this year designed especially for up-and-coming creatives age 19 to 27. Talented young people are invited to submit concepts in the fields of media art, media design and media technology—and yes, the key word here is concepts, since the realization of the prize-winning project will then be made possible through the cooperation of the Ars Electronica Center and voestalpine. The winner will receive a grant in the amount of 7,500 euros as well as an invitation to spend a semester as scientific assistant and artist-in-residence at the Ars Electronica Futurelab and to bring his/her project to fruition there. The Ars Electronica Futurelab is a leading R&D lab specializing in virtual reality applications and the production of interactive installations featuring a wide range of physical interfaces.
The culmination of the grant recipient’s experience will no doubt be the chance to exhibit the realized project in conjunction with the 2004 Ars Electronica Festival. This represents a superb opportunity to showcase one’s talent before an international audience and to establish contacts with experts in one’s chosen field—and thus a great way to take the next step on a promising career path.
The competition is open to all artists and students age 19-27 working in media art, media technology or media design. If you’ve come up with a great idea in one of these areas, then by all means: get it down on paper, develop a concept and sent it in!
