Baby Jet

Überschall-Magnetzug im Vakuumtunnel
4. 9. 19:45

The 2010 Klangwolke (Cloud of Sound) visualizes the railroad of the future. The lawine torrèn artists’ network under the direction of Hubert Lepka will transform Linz’s riverside Donaupark into a “computing space” amidst the evening twilight on September 4, 2010. Before the audience’s very eyes and ears, a thriller will be played out to a soundtrack by Peter Valentin. Three physicists on the project crew will stage a live supersonic event-experiment designed to showcase the train of the future: BABY JET.

BABY JET is an underground magnet (maglev) train that can exceed Mach 1 traveling through a vacuum tunnel. Trains running every two minutes interconnect Europe’s cities like a subway system. BABY JET’s energy balance sheet is sensational: virtually no friction; hardly any air resistance; braking energy fed back into the system to power the next acceleration—just like a Porsche.

BABY JET is not a work of art. This concept train is the centerpiece of a transportation project that was initiated by lawine torrèn and is being developed in cooperation with the ÖBB–Austrian Federal Railways, the Ars Electronica Futurelab and the Linz Center of Mechatronics. From feasibility assessment to rapid prototyping: this pioneering concept is moving forward at high speed.
