Gallery Spaces Panel IV: Preservation of Media Art

Every artwork needs is own conservation strategies to survive the usage over time. Especially the technical diversity of media artworks need the awareness of every possible preservation scenario. It has to happen now, to keep the experience for future art lovers and historians alive.

Marie-Therese Hochwartner (AT)

Marie-Therese Hochwartner is part of the digital core team and the collection department at the Museum für moderne Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien. Her responsibilities include the written estates, archives, and digitization. She studied art history in Basel and Vienna. Recent curatorial projects include My body is the event (2015, with Eva Badura), We Pioneer. Trailblazers of Postwar Modernism (2016, with Susanne Neuburger), Film and more. From the archives of Kurt Kren and Ernst Schmidt jr. (2018, with Naoko Kaltschmidt, Susanne Neuburger, Matthias Michalka).

Media artist, researcher and senior lecturer of Media Art in the Fine Arts Faculty – Universitat Politècnica de València UPV (Spain). Doctorated in Visual Art and Intermedia by UPV. Director of the Master’s degree in Visual Arts and Multimedia since 2012.

Since 2000 member of the research group in media art called “Laboratorio de Luz.”- UPV.

He started work in interactive art the 90´s middle, developing interactive multimedia narratives offline (experimental cd-rom) and online (netart). His works has been presented and awarded in many festivals and exhibitions related to art and technology, in and out of Spain since 1998.

He has presented papers and participated in round tables at electronic art festivals as FutureEverything (Manchester), Ars Electronica- Electro Campus (Linz-Austria), Transmediale (Berlin), AMAZE (Berlin) and ISEA, Istanbul.

Vicente Matallana (ES)

Vicente Matallana is the director of the BEEP Electronic Art Collection, as well as the founder and director of LaAgencia, an independent new media art company created in 1998 in Madrid. LaAgencia is engaged in programs and projects focused on new media art as an alternative paradigm of research and knowledge. Matallana is also a teacher and lecturer and regularly publishes articles and sits on international juries, seminars and committees for new media art. He is professor in the new Master in Curatorial Studies at Universidad de Navarra. With Joasia Krysa, he has been the co-director of the Kunsthal Aarhus, Aarhus. He is a member of the advisory board of Kurator, as well as a member of the board of directors and treasurer of the Institute of Contemporary Art, the main art professional association of Spain. He is the director of the New Art Foundation and project director of ArtFutura, the veteran new media art festival in Spain.

Sonia Milewska (PL)

Sonia Milewska – art restorer, art writer based in Cracow (PL). She is member of the Senster 2.0 Project team. In 2014 she graduated in Preservation of Cultural Heritage in The Department of History of Art at the Jagiellonian University. The restoration of Senster is the subject of her diploma from Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. Her main interests are contemporary art, photography, new media and its preservation and dissemination.
