Biographies




Fareed Armaly, born in Iowa. After completing high school, he moved between various states, universities and art academies. In 1988 and 1989 he edited and published two journals on music and culture (Terminal Zone, R.O.O.M.). He is an artist.

Peter Assmann, born in 1963, studied art history, history and German. Since 1992 director of the Stifterhaus gallery as well as the regional gallery in the OÖ. Landesmuseum in Linz. Since 1993 curator for the art history and graphic collections of the OÖ. Landesmuseum Linz

Anna Bickler (Supreme particles), born 1964 in Friedberg. Studied film at the Academy of Design, Offenbach; since 1991 on the Institute for New Media, Städelschule, Frankfurt. Participant in various festivals including the 4. Eureopean Media Art Festival, Osnabrück; Olympic Museum, Sarajevo; Polytechnichs Central, London; Videonale, Bonn; and the German Video Awards: The 50 Best.

Michael Bielicky, born 1954 in Prague. He studied medicine at Düsseldorf University and recieved his MA in 1987 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf from Nam June Paik. In 1991 he founded the Video Department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he is Associate Professor. His work has been shown at MOMA, NYC, Documenta 8, Kassel and numerous other shows around the world.

Loren Carpenter is the inventor and President of CINEMATRIX TM Interactive Entertainment Systems Inc. He is a pioneer in the field of computer graphics and, together with his wife Rachel, founded Cinematrix to explore the intersection of computers and art. Cinematrix is currently focusing on the development of interactive audience participation technology.

Stephen Galloway, American, born in Pennsylvania, he came to Ballet Frankfurt in 1985.

Albina Mirella d’Urbano, born 1955 in Tivoli. Studied painting under Prof. Enzo Brunori at the Accademia de Belle Arti, and visual communication at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Grant Recipient in Berlin, Darmstadt and Paris. Since 1990 artistic work at the Institute for New Media in Frankfurt. Participant in group and solo exhibitions in Berlin, Genoa, Frankfurt, Rome, Mannheim, Venice (Biennale) and Milan.

Christoph Forst, born 1965 in Freistadt. Since 1987 has studied with Prof. Gsöllpointner at the Academy for Artistic and Industrial Design in Linz (Master class for Metal and Object Design). 1992/93 received a grant to study at the Art Academy, Düsseldorf. Works in metal sculpture, public sculpture, architectural conception, as well as product and furniture design.

Karl Gerbel, born 1939 in Linz. Since 1984 chairman of the board of directors for the Linzer Veranstaltungsgesellschaft (LIVA) and is responsible for activities at the Town Hall, sport center, Brucknerhaus, stadium, Posthof and the children’s cultural center. He is also a member of the board of directors for Ars Electronica.

Friedrich Gulda was born in 1930. A child prodigy, he went on to explore all the avenues of a virtuoso career, before developing into an audacious musical non-conformist. Wherever he appears on the scene, music-making loses its conventional aura. Gulda announces his programmes; he protests – mainly in his own compositions – against the boundaries arrogantly drawn between "Iight" and "serious" music; he gives jazz its due place in his programmes; he is the driving force behind the efforts to break up the rigid ritual of concert routine; he carries on a tough struggle for the rediscovery and recognition of improvisation in music; he would like to see music become more alive and more colorful, with less grim determination.

Franz Hannes, born 1960 in Innsbruck. Studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Munich and Vienna (sculpture and painting). 1990 assistant to Leiko Ikerrura at the Summer Academy, Salzburg. Lives in Vienna and has had exhibitions in Graz, Innsbruck, Paris, Laibach, and Berlin.

Karln Hazelwande was born in Austria and lives in Vienna. Exhibitions in the Museum of Modern Art, Vienna (1984); Museum Ludwig, Cologne (1988); Pac Gallery, Chicago (19891; Museum of the 21st Century (1989); Gallery Zacheta, Warsaw (19911; Frontiera, Bozen (1992); Museum in Progress/Reise zu den Quellen (1993); OÖ. Landesmuseum, Linz (1994); Steirischer Herbst, Graz (1993 and 1994).

Perry Hoberman has presented installations, spectacles, sculptures and performances throughout the United States and Europe. Hoberman is represented by Postmasters Gallery, and currently teaches at the Cooper Union School of Art.

Kathy Rae Huffman is a freelance curator and writer on media and contemporary art. Ms. Huffman was Curator/Producer of the Contemporary Art Television Fund. In 1987 she co-curated The Arts for Television. Since 1991 Ms. Huffman has lectured extensively on artvideos, interactive TV, and the history of artists and television.

Gottfried Hongsberg, born 1944 in Bavaria. Runs an engineering office in Munich.

Elfriede Jelinek, born 1946 in Mürzzuschlag. Studied theater arts, art history and music in Vienna. Lived as a freelance writer in Vienna, Munich, and Paris. A selection of her works include: Die Liebhaberinnen, 1975; Die Ausgesperrten, 1980; Die Klavierspielerin, 1983; Lust, 1989; Wolken. Heim.,1990; Malina, Ein Filmbuch, 1991 (a screenplay for Werner Schroeters filming of Ingeborg Bachmans "Malina").

Robert Jelinek, born 1970 in Pilsen (CR). Studied at the Academy of Industrial and Artistic Design in Linz (painting and graphic arts, visual design), the Art Academy Düsseldorf (free art) and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (painting and graphic arts). SABOTAGE I-XVI in Vienna, Kassel, Cologne, Salzburg, Prague, New York and Chicago.

Stefan Karp (Supreme particles), born 1962 in Frankfurt. Studied philosophy and product design. Founding member of the group INTERFACELIFTING, worked on development and preparation of concepts for user interfaces (an automatic teller for airplane tickets), multimedia, and terminal hardware. Electronic publishing exhibition at the '93 Book Convention with the group INTERFACELIFTING.

Adolph-Herbert Kelz studied at the TU in Graz and the Summer Academy at Abraham. Projects: Contest and Realization University Graz/ Heinrichstrasse (with Kapfhammer/ Wegan/Kossdorf); Housing development Ziegelstrasse/Graz (with Soren). Exhibitions: Europalia; Architecture from Graz/ BrusseIs; Visionary Architecture/Vienna; L'Europe des Createurs-Les Utopias 89 Grand Palaise/Paris; Foundation of RHIZOM-Architects; the Steiermark Prize for Architecture; an office in Graz.

Michael Klein, born in 1960 in Wuppertal. Studied physics and philosophy in Wuppertal and Tübingen. Assistant at the Institute for Physical and Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Tübingen, scientific and artistic assistant at the Städelschule Institute for New Media with Peter Weibel. He is co-author of the book "A Chaotic Hierarchy", W.S. Singapore 1991, and founded an interdisciplinary research group Engadyn in 1990.

Martin Kusch, born 1964 in Leoben. Studied visual media design under Peter Weibel in Vienna. He has participated in video festivals in Austria, Poland, Turkey, Germany, and England.

Jaron Lanier is best known as a pioneer of virtual reality, a phrase he coined. The co-inventor of many fundamental VR technologies such as interface gloves and VR networking, and an innovator in the field of visual programming, Jaron is also an accomplished composer, visual artist and author. He has performed with Philip Glass, Ornette Coleman, Terry Riley, Barbara Higbie and Stanley Jordan.

Brigitte Löcker studied at the TU in Graz and Cooper Union in New York; worked with Raimund Abraham and John Hejduk; participated in an internship program with Dore Ashton; received practical training from Allen McCollum and Kim Wang in New York; doctoral work with Karin Wilhelm in Graz. Projects: exhibitions in Graz, Vienna, New York, Hungary, and Houghton.

Hermen Maat, born 1963 in the Netherlands. Studied at the Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam. Participant postgraduate program Van Eyck Academy, Maastricht. Most of his works concern themselves with identity in the broadest sense. Exhibitions in The Netherlands, Denmark and USA. Received several grants and scholarships.

Gideon May (Supreme particles), born 1964 in Rotterdam. He has worked as a fashion photography assistant. Until 1986 he worked as a special effects artist for film and TV as well as working three years as an assistant cameraman. In 1987 he began work programming computer graphics for various projects, including The Table of Spirits for Ars Electronica 1993 and work for the Softimage Company.

Ron Miltenburg, born 1951 in Rotterdam. Studied eastern philosophy in India, Switzerland, and the USA; and has studied art history in Amsterdam. Researches the various paradigms of metonyms and metaphors. He is a freelance publicist, curator, television and video producer. Exhibitions in the USA and the Netherlands.

Paul Modler (Supreme particles), born 1959 in Aschaffenburg. Composer and musician in the conflicting fields of improvised and notated music, acoustic an a electronic sound generation. Developed an algorithmic sound system.

Christian Willer, born 1959 in Frankfurt. Studied architecture in Frankfurt. He then received a grant to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Gustav Peichl. Between 1988 and 1990 he worked at the architectural agency Behnisch and Partner in Stuttgart. Since 1991 he has run his own agency in Frankfurt, where he has also taught classes in virtual architecture for the department of architecture at the Städelschule.

Monique Mulder, born 1965 in Rotterdam. Studied at the Art Academy, Den Haag (architecture, interior design); and received postgraduate training in computer graphics and animation. She has worked as an assistant director, production assistant for television, production director and stylist for fashion photography, stylist for architecture and interior design, and as a producer for a 3-D animation.

Ponton – Van Gogh TV, since 1986 various radio and TV projects, e.g. interactive TV projects at Ars Electronica 1986, 1989, 1990. In 1986 they founded Ponton European Media Art Lab in Hamburg. In 1992 Piazza virtuale, 100 days of interactive live TV at documenta 9 in Kassel. In 1993 Piazza virtuale live in Japan.

PRINZGAU/podgorschek, born in Austria and Jugoslavia. They focus their efforts on public spaces, the architecture of complementation, infiltration and objects, film and the arrangement of exhibitions. Films/Festivals: Musee des arts d'afrique at Oceanie, Paris; Warehouse Loft, Chicago; Festival Rotterdam; Cannes; Triennale Milan.

Günther Rabl, born 1953 in Linz. Completed studies in electrical engineering. He has been composing since the opening of his own experimental studio. In 1979 and again in 1989 he received a state grant for composition. He has developed his own software package for the numerical manipulation of music on the PC and is teaching at the Institute for Electro-Acoustics at the Music Academy in Vienna.

Constanze Ruhm, born 1965 in Vienna. 1985 began studying at the Masterclass for Visual Media Design, Academy of Applied Arts, Vienna. In 1991 she began studies at the Institute for New Media, Städelschule, Frankfurt. She has had a solo exhibition in Graz and a shared exhibition with Peter Sandbichler in Vienna. Ms. Ruhm has also taken part in group exhibitions in Vienna, Paris, Istanbul, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Graz and New York. In 1993 she received an Honorable Mention for computer graphics at the 1993 Prix Ars Electronica.

Peter Sandbichler, born 1964 in Kufstein. Studied wood and stone sculpture until 1983. He has also studied under Prof. Martin Knox at the Arts Student League, NYC; under Wander Bertoni at the Academy of Applied Arts, Vienna; and under Prof. Bruno Gironcalli at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. He has had solo exhibitions at Gallery Krinzinger and Grita Insam, and has taken part in group exhibitions in Graz, Vienna, Montreal, Bozen, Los Angeles, Paris, Berlin, Rostock, Barcelona and Linz.

Michael Saup (Supreme particles), born 1961 in Jungingen. Studied music at Dominican College, San Rafael, California; computer science in Furtwangen and visual communications at the Academy of Design in Offenbach. He has been teaching video and computer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and the Academy of Design in Offenbach. He has also been the artistic research assistant at the Institute for New Media, Städelschule in Frankfurt since 1990. In 1993 he took up the role of Guest Professor at the Art Academy, Bremen.

Joachim Sauter (ART+COM), born 1959. Studied at the Academy of Arts and the German Film and Television Academy, Berlin. He has worked, taught, published, exhibited and received international awards. (e.g. the prize for interactive art at Ars EIectronica '92 for his work "Zerseher"). Founding member of Art + Com, Berlin. He is now Professor of Design for Digital Media, Academy of Arts.

Elliot Sharp, Composer/multi-intrumentalist Elliott Sharp leads the groups CARBON and ORCHESTRA CARBON, DYNERS CLUB, BOOTSTRAPPERS, and TERRAPLANE. Sharp records extensively for a number of independent labels in the United States, Canada, and Germany with recent releases of CARBON, ORCHESTRA CARBON, and DYNERS CLUB. DIGITAL appears on the new disc by Kronos Quartet. In 1977, he founded the zOaR label to release his own and other extreme music.

Jeffrey Shaw, born 1944 in MeIbourne, Presently director of the ZKM Institute for Visual Media, Karlsruhe. Selected works: Corpocinema, "Sigma Projects", Museumsplein, Amsterdam 1967; Diadrama, Lantaren Theater, Rotterdam 1974; Viewpoint, 6th Biennale de Paris, Museé d'Art Moderne, Paris 1975; Eve, "Multimedia 3", Center for Art and Media (ZKM) Karlsruhe.

Soldier String Quartet, since their founding in 1985, the Soldier String Quartet has been fusing and confusing the notions of chamber and popular music. The SSO appeared on records with John Cage, Robert Dick, Nicolas Collins, Phill Niblock, Elliott Sharp and Jonas Hellborg with Tony Williams.

Station Rose was founded in 1988 by Elisa Rose and Gary Danner, interface designers and propagandists for a new culture of consciousness who have their roots in the classic fine arts as well as the myths and rituals of pop culture. They have been producing recordings, videos, installations and fashion since 1979, and in 1991 Station Rose moved its base of operations to Frankfurt.

Stadtwerkstatt, founded 1979. In the 80's, the primary concern was the creation of the center. The stage was freedom and freedom the stage. Decentralization was imposed in the 90's, which resulted in the creation of node points for a communicative sculpture. The stage is everywhere - it is the interface to dialogue.

Charly Steiger, born 1958, Ms. Steiger lived in Frankfurt am Main since 1979. She has created spatial installations using various media (video, light) and musical projects in Frankfurt, Kassel, Cologne, Munich, Leipzig, Darmstadt, Mainz, Trier, Budapest, Perth, Linz, s'Hertogenbosch and Valencia.

Gerold A. Thaler, born 1965 in Linz. Has studied since 1987 under Prof. Gsöllpointner at the Academy of Artistic and Industrial Design, Linz (Master Class for Metal and Object Design). Works in metal and public sculpture, architectural conception, as well as product and furniture design.

Mark Trayle, born 1955 in California. He attended the University of Oregon and Mills College, studying composition with Robert Ashley, David Behrman, and David Rosenboom. Performances in the U.S. and Europe. He received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the City of San Diego. As a member of the computer network band, The Hub, he has performed at major festivals and venues throughout the United States and Europe.

Wolfgang Tschapeller, born in Dölsach, Osttirol. Cabinetmaker, studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, received his MA in the US and has taught there at Cornell University. Works in Vienna. A selection of his projects includes the Trigon Museum in Graz, Berggasse in Vienna and Alexanderplatz in Berlin.

Woody Vasulka, born in Brno, CSFR. Studied metal technologies and hydraulic mechanics. Together with Steina he founded The Kitchen, a NYC media theater, and has participated in many major shows in the US and abroad, given lectures, published articles, composed music and made numerous videotapes. He is a 1979 Guggenheim Fellow and currently resides in Santa Fe, NM.

Peter Weibel was born in 1945 in Odessa. He studied literature, medicine, logic, and philosophy in Paris and Vienna. He has taught at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna; the College of Art and Design in Halifax, Canada; the Gesamthochschule Kassel and the Center for Media Study, University of NewYork in BuffaIo. Since 1989 he has been Director of the Institute for New Media at the Städelschule, Frankfurt. Countless publications.

Hans Peter Wörndl, born in Salzburg. Graduated from the technical school in Hochbau. Studied architecture at the TU Munich with postgraduate work at Cornell where he has also taught. A selection of his works include the Wittgensteingründe apartment complex in Vienna (together with Rieder and Tschapeller), an award of the first class for the Messepalast contest (together with Rieder), and the Viennese High-Rise Study (with Rieder, Coop Himmelblau and others).
