Creatures

'Daizaburo Harada Daizaburo Harada

It began from sounds.

I have been very interested in sounds, such as those from banging machines or household appliances, when being switched off, and have collected various examples.

One day it occurred to me that with a computer I could make creatures, that emit strange chirping sounds.

At first I made one every now and then. I was not able to feel their real existence until the number reached one hundred. When I had made three to four hundred creatures, suddenly I could not ignore that I had created something. But when they had gathered to the tune of five to six hundred, it was impossible not to acknowledge that they were somehow alive, though they had been made for my own amusement.

It may be thought as a biosystem created by a computer.

In this thoroughly new ecosystem, which evolved in the digital world of a computer, live various imaginary creatures were made by me with a computer.

In the process of creating them I decide only the major points; the other details are drawn by the computer itself.

For example, I roughly decide that there will be six to seven globes around a globe, and then wildly transform the data of each globe.

Even I cannot guess the final image.

Of course, it's I who operate the computer, but there is some scope governed by the computer, in which I am interested.
