QUANTIZED QUANTZ

'Benedict Mason Benedict Mason

Quantized Quantz for solo flute and electronics refers not only to the famous treatises on fluteplaying by Quantz, Tromlitz and Hotteterre but also to built-in rhythmic shortcuts incorporated into some commercial sequencing software that when used deliberately peversely cause unintended rhythmic results. Apart from Quantz there are references to other famous flute players through the ages.

The piece makes use of an 'instrument' called Metro Pan Chaopoly Max that I developed in 1991 at CNMAT (Berkeley, California) and IRCAM.
