IKREK (for 2 five-stringed electric basses and electronics)
'Duncan Youngerman
Duncan Youngerman
The instrumentation for this piece was sparked off by my friend and collegue Kasper Toeplitz's uncommon collection of electric stringed instruments.
My specific choice of 2 five-stringed basses is related of course to the added range given by the 5th string, but also to some symbolic ideas: Each of the 2 instruments is like a (five-fingered) hand and / or like a (five-lined) music stave. The composition involves interaction between these (abstractly) poetic metaphores and the (very physical) wealth of sound possibilities offered by the instruments and their electronic extensions. IKREK is the word "twins" (or "gemini") in Hungarian.
