Ron Averill

Ron Averill (USA), Graduate Assistant in the School of Music Computer Center (SMCC) completed his Masters in composition at Western Washington University studying with Edwin LaBounty and currently studies composition with Richard Karpen. His recent accomplishments include receiving a Mention in the 1994 Bourges Electroacoustic Composition Competition for "painting legs on the snakes".

In the Fall of 1990 I composed GDOD for four trombones and piano. This work signaled the beginning of a significant change in my compositional style. Gestures began to replace melodies and harmonies, and parameters such as density, speed and loudness became the structural building blocks. GDOD was followed by two pieces for chamber orchestra and another for tape, which continued this evolution of style. Kreasi baru, a term used für new gamelan works in Java, means "new creation", and "gdod kreasi baru" is a culmination of the process which began with GDOD. "gdod kreasi baru" draws upon a variety of musical sources ranging from gamelan to 20th Century Western art music. Sounds were sampled and manipulated using the sndwarp software developed by Richard Karpen which allows pitches and timings to be altered independently. For example, a note or passage can be slowed down by any amount without the pitch being affected. This is accomplished by taking windows of the sampled sound and overlapping them, thus causing the sound to be stretched in time while maintaining the original pitch. The process of shifting the pitch has no effect upon the duration of the sound.
