HONORARY MENTION
Igniters
Jack Tamul

Jack Tamul (USA), born 1948, project director for JTM Studios Inc. in Jacksonville, Florida. Soundtracks for film, mult/media and video projects. Multi-disciplinary collaboration with architects and engineers on sound sculptures such as the "Four Tunnels" at the Orlando International Airport in Florida.

In my jungle of glass and steel, citizens engage in urban combat. The explosive rhythm of their gunfire echoing in the caverns of the cityscape, the police helicopters racing across the sky, and the primordial screams of the warriors in close combat all become sinister music to my ears.

"Igniters" is a composition that evolves as a cumulative structure. It begins with the development of a small rhythmic motif that is extended into a highly charged theme by combining overlays that each have specific registral saturations. The theme is then frantically repeated without any pause. Every line is constantly transformed by various chains of digital signal processing and manually controlled phase shifting. Each of these individual line transformations preserves the vestige of the theme, whose rhythmic nature, though recurring with different effects, remains clearly recognizable. The constant shift of emphases of the individual lines and the unstabilizing dynamic discourse created by the cumulative processing of the combined lines create diverse phrases charged with unpredictable inner tensions as the lines continually fight merging and staying separate.
