HONORARY MENTION
Jumanji
Industrial Light & Magic (ILM)

Industrial, Light & Magic (ILM), a division of LucasArts Entertainment Company in San Rafael, California, has been specialized in computer animation for film production. They worked on films like "The Abyss", "Terminator II", "Death Becomes Here", "Jurassic Park" (Golden Nica at Prix Ars Electronica 94) and "The Mask".

"Jumanji" is the story of a game which, when played, thrusts curse after curse upon the players, their home und town until and unless they can complete the game. The audience is treated to a cornucopia of creatures from a distant, fantastic jungle world as welt as an adventure which tests the friendship and love between friends and family members.

"Jumanji" represented a bold step forward in computer graphics technology, including the realistic representation of hair and feathers used for monkeys, pelicans and especially the lion.

The large number of creatures demanded a talented and resourceful animation team. The "vortex" and "Alan Disappearing" sequences required the coordination of complex FFD animation of human and animal figures combined with finely-tuned particle and surface animation to generate the body of the vortex itself.

We engineered an invisible jump cut from a live-action car to a completely CG car early in the vine car-crushing shot. We developed new techniques for controlling animated quicksand, attaching leaves to vines, complex water sequence composites and animation of large numbers of realistic bats.
