In the winter of 1999, I was involved in syntax analysis (parsing). In order to find out whether I had really understood the methods presented in the book Algorithmen in C by Robert Sedgewick, I wanted to write a program interpreter. In honor of the occasion, I called the program written in the programming language “C” “Cind” (Christkind). It soon turned out that I had not understood the methods presented, but for the simple application case of the Christmas angel lost in a labyrinth, it was still sufficient (although the archaic black and white display may not appeal as much to the uninitiated as it does to me, the proud author).

In April of the following year, the student newspaper In and Online (www.inandonline.x2.nu) was already running at full speed (and I can proudly say that I contributed to that). In keeping with my position as “chief programmer”, when I decided that the time had come, I designed a programming competition.
For this, I needed to pose a problem that everyone could understand and a “programming language” that would be easy to learn. “Cind” seemed to be ideal for this, and I re-implemented the program in the programming language “Java”, which is reflected in the new name “Jind” (besides, the Christmas angel is not really appropriate in the spring). This was supplemented by a more colorful surface and nice buttons for operating it – everything the modern surfer desires. I owe the fact that I was able to submit “Jind” at all to a lot of lucky circumstances and a number of people, who have influenced me in many ways. Many thanks to all of you!
