DISTINCTION
uterus=raum=universum
Susanne Legerer
Using a sonogram we can explore the space of the uterus in all its complexity, and make its dimensions, transparencies and boundaries discernible. And yet a picture of my uterus made using ultrasound has an alienating effect on me. What I see looks more like galaxies and stardust than something I can associate with my own body. So the film uterus=raum=universum (uterus=space=universe) is a research project that investigates the analogies between this microcosm and the vast macrocosmic space of the universe. "To see the world in a grain of sand/And a heaven in a wild flower…," as William Blake wrote - just as the world is reflected in a grain of sand, the universe is reflected in my uterus. Laden with social connotations, the uterus as a female space of transformation becomes a mirror of our universe.
On the auditory as well as visual plane, the sonographic process is compared to the process of sighting the universe through the Hubble Space Telescope. The one works with sound waves offive megahertz that are emitted and then absorbed or reflected by the body. The other works with visible light: infrared and ultraviolet rays. I used sinusoidal tones to compare the two systems and to make the dimensions of both the microcosm and macrocosm audible.
