HONORARY MENTION
Original Copies
Fuel, Peter Miles , Damon Murray , Stephen Sorrell

Over the last six months Fuel have produced, edited and directed a series of short films under the title Original Copies. Lasting approximately 25 minutes, the films are a continuous succession of messages and comments, using a mixture of graphics, live action and computer animation.

Original Copies features: A seductive sequence of pornographic stills combined with moving type to form a riddle about AIDS; an animated text narrated by Patrick Moore explaining the Heisenberg Theory of Change, illustrated by live action sequences of Fuel in motion; a series of live-action portraits of young video game players under intense concentration during a game; and a narrated DNA text that suggests the extent of genetic control in the future—live-action footage of teenage kissers cut with film of a pit bull terrier trained to hang from the branch of a tree to strengthen it’s jaw lock. A collaboration with Juergen Teller, Kate Moss and writer Shannan Peckham produced a five minute section called Can I Own Myself, which asks questions about the authorship and ownership of images. The combination of Teller and Moss, utilised for the first time on video, allows the viewer to question the commercial and moral applications of an image.

Their films have been screened at onedotzero ’97 and ’98, at the ICA, the Cardiff International Animation Festival ’98, Rotterdam Film Festival ’99 and at the Lux cinema.
