Symposium at the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York
A symposium entitled “Interaction, Immersion and the Illusion of Control” will be held May 21-22, 2004 at the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York in conjunction with the opening of “Digital Avant-Garde: Celebrating 25 Years of Ars Electronica.”
Prominent artists will spend two days elaborating on computer art and what makes it unique. The production of works of art that originate at the nexus of art, science and technology usually more closely resembles scientific research than the process of artistic creation that one commonly associates with the so-called fine arts. Ongoing technological development is thus being accompanied by changes in works of art, and this raises questions about the possibility of collecting and exhibiting such works as well as issues related to authorship and interpretation.
The line-up of speakers on Friday, May 21 includes Maurice Benayoun, Jim Campbell, Luc Courchesne, John Gerrard, Lynn Hershman, Perry Hoberman, Paul Sermon and Jeffrey Shaw. Speaking on Saturday, May 22 will be Christa Sommerer, Laurent Mignonneau, Kazuhiko Hachiya, Zachary Lieberman, David Rokeby, Justin Manor, Golan Levin and Myron Krueger. Both sessions will run from 1 PM to 5:30 PM.
This event is being made possible by the generous support of SAP.
