Ars Electronica 2005: The Bottom Line
“Hybrid – living in paradox” was the theme of this year’s Ars Electronica, the festival that annually makes Linz the international center of media art.

More than 450 top-name artists, scientists and theoreticians from 26 countries convened September 1-6, 2005 with festivalgoers from around the world at exhibitions, performances and keynote addresses that presented the latest astounding developments in the cyberarts and the innovative technologies that go along with them.

“Attendance numbers were remarkably high this year, and the attendees’ confrontation with the Festival’s gist and content was also on an impressively high level,” according to Ars Electronica Artistic Director Gerfried Stocker. “Ars Electronica has once again succeeded in showcasing the breadth of media art and underscoring its significance for our time.”

There were highly positive reactions to the Ars Electronica Gala’s exhilarating new format that keeps the spotlight of attention shining right where it belongs: on the artists and their prizewinning works. There was also a lot of positive feedback about the rearrangement of the Festival program to run from Thursday to Tuesday, which makes it possible to take maximum advantage of the entire weekend.

And two new venues—Architekturforum Oberösterreich and Landesgalerie Linz—were well received and attracted large crowds. Another big success was the Animation Festival that premiered this year on the Ars Electronica program.

33,000 visitors, 453 artists and scientists, and 532 journalists from a total of 35 countries attest to Ars Electronica’s position as one of the world’s most important media art festivals.
