Blogger’s Best

One hour before the festival kicks off, the mysterious figure going by the name of Festivalblogger will now take the liberty of giving his own personal recommendations for maximum enjoyment of ORIGIN – how it all begins.

31.08.2011 Mi/Wed

The Ars Electronica Quarter opens its doors; the Tesla Orchestra is the evening’s don’t-miss highlight; Ars Electronica premiere; opening act: Gameboy Music Club, a tough act to follow! For a great pre-show snack, head for Warmen Hans on Hauptplatz.

Spend a relaxing morning, summon your strength, and then slowly make your way to Linz Art University to enjoy the opening of Tsukuba’s Campus exhibition. If you need to get out and stretch your legs, a stroll through the riverside park between the Lentos and the Brucknerhaus is always nice, but be sure to be back at the OK to check out the CyberArts-Exhibition before 6:30 PM to catch the shuttle bus to adventure in Hausruck. To avoid that desolate feeling of being left behind ‘cause there were no seats left, don’t you think it would be a good idea to make a reservation???

Whoever has even a modicum of interest in technology and physics should plan on showing up in the Brucknerhaus at 10 AM, and actually you could even plan on spending the whole day there listening to a world-class lineup of speakers at the ORIGIN-Symposium. But by all means go easy on yourself on Friday—conserve you strength for an all-nighter in the Cathedral where sound artist Sam Auinger will be putting 100 000 m³ of air in motion in an extraordinary way!

Two more ORIGIN Symposium panels are scheduled for Saturday. But anyone who’s already ready to shift intellectual gears is advised to make the pilgrimage to the Cathedral (unless, of course, you’re already there) and take in Android-Theatre “Sayonara”. An unforgettable experience awaits you! On Saturday afternoon, Deep Space will be the setting for the presentation of the first official volume of texts and images depicting CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, which will include fine musical accompaniment by members of the Vienna Philharmonic. Festivalgoers are faced with tough choices today.

On Sunday, the difficult decisions just keep on coming: Day 2 of the Pixelspaces Conference on science and art, or perhaps public square squared about social media and their influence on society. Or simply have yourself cloned and do both! But I think we can all agree that a fitting way to conclude this interesting day is by attending the Big Evening Concert featuring music, machines and pleasant strolls.
05.09.2011 Mo/Mon
Finally time to take in a few Exhibitions—Brucknerhaus, Lentos, Art University. Take your time, there’s a lot to see. But the REALLY big show comes that evening—there’s a band named GelbGut playing on the AEC’s Maindeck and they’re incredible (and the Festivalblogger should know ‘cause he’s one half of it). The Tesla Orchestra will also be on hand. And Cherry Sunkist will be playing Stadtwerkstatt.

Stroll around the Ars Electronica Quarter, check out the food court, do that meet-and-greet thing you do so well, and just kick back as a successful festival winds down.
