10:30 AM – 5:50 PM

Brucknerhaus, Mittlerer Saal

Curatorial Statement by the Guest Curators Isaac Mao (CN) & David Sasaki (US)

For 80 days the world will come to Linz. Inspired by Jules Verne’s epic 19th century journey “Around the World in 80 Days”, we too shall take advantage of the latest technologies of our day in order to explore and experience some of the most remote and fascinating locations on our planet; from the ship-wrecking yards of Gadani, Pakistan to the skyscrapers of Dubai to the bustling markets of Bangladesh, and far beyond.  For 80 days, from June 17th until September 4th, digital artists based around the world will take us on a tour of what our world has become. On September 5th, the 81st day of our voyage, we will chart new maps of where our world is heading.

History Talks

History Talks are get-togethers of Ars Electronica protagonists and will get into individual points of view, experiences and reminiscences having to do with content and events. For example, guests will be elaborating on their favorite projects and justifying their selections on the basis of material culled from the Festival Archive. Guests are invited to go though the whole catalog of superlatives: their biggest disappointments, most moving experience and most inspiring moment.

Pixelspaces 2009 – Do-it-Together!

Foto: rubra

Fri 4.9. – Mon 7.9.

Ars Electronica Center

This year’s Pixelspaces, the annual symposium held under the auspices of the Ars Electronica Futurelab, is dedicated to art by new and not-yet-institutionalized bridge-builders, focusing on the novel poetic forms of expression that result. It focuses on the “Do-it-Together!” of art and science before the backdrop of converging technologies. The new Ars Electronica Center provides a setting for a new conference format: a nomadic symposium staged along the topography of the facility’s exhibits and their component installations.

Overall Director of the Conference: Dieter Daniels and Sandra Naumann
An event in conjunction with SEE THIS SOUND
A cooperation between the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute Media.Art.Research. and the Lentos Art Museum Linz with Linz 2009 European Capital of Culture

See this Sound – Sound-Image Relations in Art, Media and Perception

The project SEE THIS SOUND explores the past and present of the link between image and sound in art, media and perception. The starting point is the fact that our world of experience today is marked by an omnipresence of audiovisual products and structures, in which the cultural production of image and sound is closely intertwined artistically, and in terms of media technology and market strategy. SEE THIS SOUND reacts to this by presenting and discussing different realizations of contemporary art and art studies. The current fields of reference range here from pop culture to the theory of perception and media technology.

Scenes & Structures

As the first festival of its kind, Ars Electronica has attracted a great deal of attention from the very beginning. This enthusiastic reception can be attributed to the festival’s pioneering role, one it still plays today, as well as to its reputation and function as a trading place for information, an exchange hub for ideas and projects whose impact extends beyond the scope of the festival itself.

Ars Electronica has always made an effort to offer younger festivals, initiatives and media art laboratories diverse platforms on which to present their work to a wider audience. This has given rise in recent years to an important endeavor – diverting the spotlight focused on the Ars Electronica project onto related enterprises and their concerns.

In its 30th year, Ars Electronica is exerting an even stronger pull thanks to its anniversary’s coincidence with Linz’s year as European Capital of Culture, and through the opening of the new Ars Electronica Center. This constellation provides an opportunity to give what has up to now been somewhat of an informal presentation its own festival format for the first time, thus lending it a higher profile. Not as a program with a defined thematic structure, but rather as an open stage – as *Scenes and Structures*. This will cast a more focused light on what has already been a tradition for several years.

Within the scope of this format, for example, Andreas Broeckmann, artistic director of the ISEA 2010, will present the direction this symposium will take for the Ruhr Valley’s year as European Capital of Culture (D); the artistic and technical ensemble of the Dutch media center V2_ will present their relaunch and new concept; and the International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology, *Leonardo*, will introduce its recently developed education forum. The Spanish VIDA competition, whose twelfth edition will again focus on artificial-life technologies and the associated disciplines such as robotics and artificial intelligence, is just as much a part of *Scenes and Structures* as the performance of computer animations from Mexico and from the SIGGRAPH milieu, or the presentation of the latest publications by Linz artist Christa Sommerer.

FutureEverything will present The FutureEverything Award and the relaunch of Futuresonic as FutureEverything.

At the Crossroads of Media Arts&Science and Technology
Education in the 21st Century-What is to be Done?

http://forum.lefnet.org/hello

Update on the Leonardo Education Forum’s mission and activities. Arts, science, design, technology, computer science and communication studies are key disciplines brought together in contemporary media arts, however relevant technologies develop rapidly and often separately from educational institutions. Consequently, a gap exists between the technological developments and their application in formal education worldwide at academic institutions as well as at middle school level and in hybrid educational scenarios.

Presentation of “Media Design” the new Teacher Training Programme for secondary schools of the University of Art and Industrial Design, Linz (www.ufg.ac.at).

Target group / Participants: educators, artists, scientists, policy makers in the field, general public

Archiving Media Art: Politics and Strategies, Workshop and Launch of the GAMA Portal

Sat 5.9.
2:00 PM – 5:30 PM

Kunstuniversität, Kollegiumgasse 2

Archives and collections of media art are closely related to the institution’s profile and mandate. Within the workshop experts discuss the significance of the institutional setting with respect to the creation of the repositories and their future perspectives. Additionally, on the basis of recent research activities, experts and artists present new ways of documentation of media art which tend to integrate the user experience into a documentation strategy for media art works – or even into the works themselves. On this occasion the new European online portal, the Gateway to Archives of Media Art (GAMA), is launched and presented.

Speakers:
Annet Dekker (Virtueel Platform, NL), Anna-Karin Larsson (Filmform Foundation, SE), Lioba Reddeker (basis wien, AT) Gerfried Stocker (Ars Electronica, AT), Matt Adams (Blast Theory, GB), Gabriella Giannachi (University of Exeter, GB), Caitlin Jones (Free curator and media theorist, US), Lizzie Muller (University of Technology Sydney, AU), Eva Kozma (C3 Center for Culture Communication Foundation, HU)
