Natural and Artificial Intelligence

FRI Sept. 8, 2017, 1:00 PM-2:00 PM, Ars Electronica Center, Seminar Room

Dr. Manuela Macedonia (IT/AT)

Similarities and differences between people and machines, in a world where objects become more and more intelligent

Is it true that intelligent machines can take away people’s jobs and become, according to Stephen Hawking, “dangerous” to us? What is behind the media reports and the alarm messages from renowned scientists about artificial intelligence? Dr. Macedonia focuses on two areas that share both natural and artificial intelligence: the ability to learn and the ability to make decisions. In understandable language, the scientist explains how intelligent information systems are being built and how much artificial intelligence is already shaping our daily lives, for example in smartphones. Intelligent systems replace factory workers every day. In a not too distant future, however, they will also be used for intellectual tasks: a perspective that is fascinating and at the same time scary.
