Thousands of autonomous responsive software organisms react to changes in their informational environment. None of the structures that originate as a result of this interaction are programmed or predictable. Each organism consists of two text files in C++, each of which has been realized in the form of one pixel. These graphic elements continuously move and undergo change in response to information from the network. Three six-meter-high prints and an installation with HairyRed software.
Casey Reas (USA) is an associate professor at the newly established Interaction Design Institute Ivrea in northern Italy. With Ben Fry of the MIT Media Lab, he is currently developing "Processing", a platform for learning fundamentals of computer programming within the context of the media arts. Reas' work explores kinetic systems through diverse digital media including software art, prints, animation, installations, and responsive sculpture. back |
