Former Farmland
04.09. - 09.09. | 10:00 - 21:00
Pfarrplatz
Former Farmland is an act of field research meant to make people aware of knowledge, traditions and (hi)stories that are being lost.
For many years now, the artistic work of Wapke Feenstra, co-founder of the “myvillages” artists’ association, has focused on rural environments and has reflected on the relationship between the city and the country, on society and its traditions, and on nature. She interacts with people and describes in text and photos subjective experiences and unique features of various different regions. In and around Zaragoza is where Wapke Feenstra launched the first installment of Former Farmland, a project she envisioned as a series. At Ars Electronica 2008, visitors to housing developments that have been constructed on the outskirts of town in recent years will have the histories of the places “left behind” sent directly to their cellphone.
Every day of the festival, a market stall on Pfarrplatz will be purveying fresh fruit and vegetables being grown on the soil that those farmers are cultivating now. Created as part of the Overtures series, Former Farmland, a project at the nexus of regional identity and global competition, works on several levels of experience to shed light on how we deal with our resources and local cultural heritage in a mobile, globally networked world.
