"Strength and Opportunities of Europe"

A Semantic Network Visualization by Dietmar Offenhuber.

During the time leading up to “The Sound of Europe,” 250 conference participants were invited to contribute input to a SWOT analysis (strengths-weaknesses, opportunities-threats) of the current situation in Europe. Their responses were analyzed and dynamically visualized in the form of a semantic network.
In this case, dynamic visualization means that the semantic network is set up as a spatial structure through which the user can independently navigate. The respective size of each word appearing on screen is indicative of how often it was mentioned. The lines connect key words and statements mentioned in the same context.
This form of visualization enables users to directly and intuitively recognize areas of emphasis and clusters as well as disparate zones characterized by clashing views. For instance, the experts queried for this study displayed a much higher degree of consensus with respect to strengths and opportunities than they did in assessing Europe’s weaknesses and the threats it faces.
