A New Cultural Economy Symposium I

Production and Creation in the Commons

05.09. | 10:30 - 13:30

Brucknerhaus

The industrial revolution, capitalism and the emergence of the firm as the primary vehicle for innovation and development shifted a great deal of focus to the notion of property as the anchor and pillar for the creation of value.

The Internet and ICT have dramatically lowered the cost of the creation and distribution of value and has enabled a new mode of production which Benkler describes as “Commons-based Peer Production.” Increasingly, non-profit, ad hoc and public groups are creating tremendous assets which were formerly squarely in the domain of corporations. In this session, we will explore the nature of commons-based peer production and look at examples in art, software and local government. We will discuss, what, if anything, needs to be changes or promoted in order for this new mode of production to flourish.
