Das Japan Media Arts Festival ist ein seit 1997 jährlich stattfindender Event, bei dem kreative Werke aus den Bereichen Kunst, Entertainment, Animation und Manga ausgestellt und ausgezeichnet werden. Die im Rahmen der Ars Electronica gezeigte Ausstellung ROBOT-ISM versucht die Entwicklung der  Roboteranimation von den 1960er-Jahren bis heute nachzuzeichnen: Gezeigt wird die Entstehung der Roboteranimation in Trickfilmen sowie ihr Einfluss auf Kunst und Technologie. Eine Auswahl der aktuellen Japanese Media Arts Festival Animationsfilme wird im Rahmen des Ars Electronica Animation Festivals gezeigt.
