By 2008, hundreds of public hotspots providing free, wireless Internet access will be set up at municipal cultural facilities, youth clubs, schools, kindergartens, senior centers, libraries and, of course, public squares all around town. A new sphere of urban communication can take shape, one that will be accompanied by a series of activities and projects. |

The 2005 Ars Electronica’s opening soiree will feature performances and concerts in an unusual setting: an Austrian Federal Railways assembly shop. A workshop is radically recontextualized for the evening’s activities. Suspended locomotives give an inkling of the venue’s day job; dramatic lighting effects endow the machinery with a nocturnal party flair. |

Mercan Dede—Secret Tribe is a one-of-a-kind personality in the Istanbul art scene that has just been exploding with creative energy lately. A musician as well as producer, he is defining artistically superb and thoroughly contemporary styles of blending Near Eastern tonal traditions and digital sounds. In his latest project entitled “Secret Tribe,” Mercan Dede and his accompanying musicians show that there is no lack of similarities between the ecstasy of Oriental dervishes and the state of inebriation of modern-day partygoers, and makes clear how close the Orient and Occident really are. |

The Danube, its banks and the surrounding buildings will become the set of a piece of historical fiction played out at fast-forward. The hypothetical premise: what would have happened if Austria’s State Treaty had not been concluded in 1955 and the country had instead been partitioned like Germany?

The visual elements are displayed on a large-format screen; the acoustic space is quadrophonic. The most important aesthetic devices are the repetition and expansion of all acoustic and visual impressions. “Listening between the Lines” is a concert evening that undertakes a journey through the history of electro-acoustic music. The milestones along the way are musique concrete, Dada, concrete poetry, electronic music and works by contemporary digital composers. Featured pieces include an interpretation of a part of Kurt Schwitter’s “Ursonate” and videos of readings by Ernst Jandl as well as compositions by such pioneers of radio art and electronic music as Herbert Eimert, Pierre Boulez and György Ligeti. “Listening between the Lines” is a further step in an ongoing collaboration between Brucknerhaus Linz and Ars Electronica that attempts to create new experimental fusions between music and visual art.
