Submissions to the 2013 Prix Ars Electronica Are Now Being Accepted

(Linz, December 18, 2012) Entries for 2013 Prix Ars Electronica prize consideration may be submitted beginning today, December 18, 2012. The competition is being held in seven categories including one for Austrian youngsters. The leading barometer of current trends in media art, the Prix Ars Electronica annually attracts submissions from more than 70 countries.

Deep Space LIVE: X-Events - The Collapse of Everything

(Linz, December 14, 2012) On December 20th and thus the very eve of the end of the world predicted by many of the esoterically inclined, Deep Space LIVE will treat the question of what would happen when some human blunder actually did cause it all to fall apart. At 8 PM, John Casti (US), scientist, author and director of the X-Center research institute, will discuss so-called X-events, extreme situations that could cause our fragile political, social and economic systems to crash.

Deep Space LIVE: Commemorative Plaques & Metal Sculpture. Monuments in Linz II

(Linz, December 7, 2012) Visitors to the next Deep Space LIVE on Thursday, December 13th will be taking a virtual stroll through Linz. Cathrin Hermann of the Municipal Archive will screen jumbo-scale, high-definition projections showing prominent (as well as some little-known) monuments and places of commemoration in Linz.

One Day on Earth at the Ars Electronica Center Linz

(Linz, December 6, 2012) On Wednesday, 12/12/2012, the Ars Electronica Center will feature an extraordinary motion picture project, one created on 10/10/2010 by a cast & crew of 19,000 people worldwide who filmed touching moments, triumphs and tragedies, or just ordinary elements of everyday life. American artist Kyle Ruddick then edited the submitted footage into a feature-length film entitled “One Day on Earth. On 12/12/2012, the next installment goes into production. Once again, all are invited to take part. From 9 AM to 5 PM, visitors to the Ars Electronica Center can shoot their own clips in the Museum of the Future and thereby contribute to this worldwide endeavor.

New Exhibition: Zeit ist Held – Time is What It’s All About

(Linz, December 6, 2012) Who’s in control of his/her time? Why is it that we always have too little of it, and why does it seem that the older we get, the faster time goes by? In conjunction with work on their master’s theses, students in the MultiMediaArt program at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences confronted these issues and put what they came up with into the form of an exhibition that is running at the Ars Electronica Center Linz from December 7, 2012 to June 30, 2013.

Deep Space – Focal Point of the Ars Electronica Center

(Linz, December 3, 2012) At the next Deep Space LIVE on Thursday, December 6th, astrophotographer Dietmar Hager will elaborate on how and why human beings since time immemorial have sought their orientation in the stars, and also discuss the impediments humankind has had to surmount on our way from the archaic concepts of the past to our modern worldviews. Deep Space will also be the hub of Science Days this coming weekend, December 8-9, with presentations changing every half hour.

The International Space Time Concerto

(Linz, November 27, 2012) Visitors to the Ars Electronica Center can attend an extraordinary concert this Friday, November 30, 2012 at 9:30 AM. The International Space Time Concerto features musicians at five locations collaboratively playing nine pieces. The participating institutions are the Newcastle Conservatorium (Australia), the Ars Electronica Center, the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (Singapore), the University of Waikato (New Zealand) and the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

Then at 8 PM, Linz adventurers Elisabeth & Peter Pflügl present an account of their arduous journey into a little-known part of Indonesia.

Diversified Thursday Lineup at the Ars Electronica Center Linz

(Linz, November 12, 2012) A fascinatingly diversified lineup is in store for visitors to the Ars Electronica Center at 6:30 PM on Thursday, November 15, 2012. In the final installment in the “Brains for All” series, Manuela Macedonia, a neuroscientist at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, will go into how the brain processes linguistic information and why reading and learning can give rise to difficulties. Then at 8 PM, Fritz Mayrhofer and Anneliese Schweiger of the Linz Municipal Archive will present historical and contemporary images that illustrate the architectural metamorphosis the city has undergone from the late 19th century to the present.

Science Days: Peeks inside the Brain

(Linz, November 7, 2012) Give some thought to the human brain during Science Days at the Ars Electronica Center on the weekend of November 10-11. Besides finding out all sorts of interesting things about how the brain works, visitors will witness how imaging techniques make mental activity visible and see other tools developed to better understand cerebral functions. There will also be opportunities to perform an eye operation with a virtual scalpel and to use eye tracking to draw conclusions about one’s own brain activity.

A Colorfully Varied Lineup at the AEC on Thursday Evening

(Linz, October 15, 2012) A diversified program of fascinating events awaits visitors to the Ars Electronica Center this Thursday evening, October 18, 2012. Kicking things off is neuroscientist Manuela Mazedonia’s latest presentation in the Brains for Everybody series. She’ll discuss the extent to which learning a musical instrument at an early age fosters a child’s linguistic skills and how music is processed by the brain. Taking over are Erwin Kraus and Christian Greifeneder from the Province of Upper Austria’s Bureau of Geoinformation and Real Estate. They used lasers to create three-dimensional models of the regional topography that can help identify centuries-old defensive emplacements and roads. Then, false color aerial imagery near the infrared range of the spectrum then delivers information about the vitality of the area’s vegetation.

Science Days: Out of Control

(Linz, October 10, 2012) At the next Science Days on October 13-14, 2012, specialists on the staff of the Department of Secure Information Systems at the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences’ Hagenberg Campus will explain what information about internet users is being stored in conjunction with telecommunications data retention, how you can protect your smartphone from undesirable incursions, and how restoring lost computer data works. Finally, tours through the “Out of Control” exhibition show what steps people can take to better protect their privacy online.

Deep Space LIVE: Transmutations

(Linz, October 8, 2012) An experimental audiovisual performance will be the centerpiece of the next Deep Space LIVE. Through the manipulation of a feedback loop consisting of image converters hooked up to cathode ray tube TV sets, Gregor Göttfert and Florian Voggeneder experiment with the reciprocal interplay of signal and interference, image and sound, and analog & digital visual aesthetics.

LINZ CHANGES

(Linz, October 7, 2012) At this year’s Urfahr Autumn Fair, the latest LINZ CHANGES exhibition offered another entertaining and educational look at Upper Austria’s capital city and its municipal services division. This time around, the substantive focus was on energy efficiency and conservation. As always, this fourth edition of LINZ CHANGES was a big hit with fairgoers. The most popular attractions were the jumbo-scale, high-definition Linz panoramas, the Shadowgram, and the energy efficiency crafts workshop at which tinkerers could turn out solar-powered toy bugs. “We once again succeeded in attracting lots of people to the exhibition space, and, once inside, keeping them interested by offering fascinating interactive installations,” is how Ars Electronica CFO Diethard Schwarzmair summed things up. “The redesigned exterior space featuring lounge chairs provided by Linz Tourismus proved to be a highly effective concept as well.”

Long Night of the Museums at the Ars Electronica Center Linz

(Linz, October 4, 2012) This year’s ORF-Long Night of the Museums runs on October 6. Over 670 museums and galleries throughout Austria are participating by staging evening events for night owls who are culture vultures too. The lineup at the Ars Electronica Center Linz includes live remote hookups to renowned centers of art & science throughout the world. Visitors will be able to use their own smartphone to pilot drones through the AEC’s lobby, create blinking brooches and glowing hair bands, and enjoy breathtaking visuals at a Best of Deep Space program.

Deep Space LIVE: Vertriders

(Linz, October 1, 2012) Breathtaking mountain panoramas and downhill runs on death-defying trials are on tap at the next Deep Space LIVE on Thursday, October 4. Filmmaker Hannes Mair accompanied a group of vertriders—mountain bike freeriders in rugged alpine terrain—on a tour in the mountains of Tyrol, and brought back some impressive footage of picturesque peaks and steep paths with hard rock on one side and nothing but air on the other. Vertrider Axel Kreuter will do the moderating.

Ars Electronica Festival 2012: THE BIG PICTURE - New Concepts for a New World

(Linz, September 3, 2012) “The Big Picture – New Concepts for a New World” was the theme of the 2012 Ars Electronica Festival. In the "Big Pictures” that went on display, the viewfinder was focused on wide-angle images that capture the world that’s coming to be, pictures that do justice to globalization and network linkages, that depict the way our world is increasingly growing together and simultaneously drifting apart. The festival was assembling models that can serve as paragons and best-practice examples from art and science, that offer inspirational demonstrations of how an open-minded way of looking at a larger whole not only reveals more of it but also brings totally new insights to light. Once again, scientists, scholars and artists from all over the world convened in Linz to present their projects and theories and put them up for discussion.

Volunteers for voestalpine Klangwolke Production Team

(Linz, August 3, 2012) The preparations for the voestalpine Klangwolke on September 1st are moving full speed ahead. Now, we’re recruiting volunteers to join the Klangwolke production staff: assembling LED suits and electronic components, performing maintenance routines on airborne robots, or manning signal flags as part of the Klangwolke choreography. The respective workshops are held every Tuesday in August at 10 AM, 2 PM and 6 PM in the Ars Electronica Center. As a token of our thanks for their public-spiritedness, volunteers will receive free passes to the Ars Electronica Center and Ars Electronica Festival T-shirts.

For Seniors: Inventing the New, Conserving the Old

(Linz, August 2, 2012) Every first and third Friday of the month, the Ars Electronica Center offers themed tours designed with seniors in mind. On August 3 & 17, visitors will learn how historical buildings and sites from Antiquity are being registered by laser and rendered with graphics programs as part of an effort to conserve them for the future. In the Ars Electronica Center’s Deep Space, tour participants will have the opportunity to explore the ancient cities of Thebes and Pompeii in 3D.

Over recent days and weeks, lots of illuminated letters have been constructed and soundcloudminiatures composed. SoundWalks on the voestalpine Plant Grounds

(Linz, July 24, 2012) Hundreds of soundcloudminiatures have already been uploaded to the voestalpine Klangwolke’s website. Sound collages, rhythms and noises are among them; so are finished music tracks. Now, attention is shifting to two SoundWalks through the fascinating acoustic domain of Linz’s world of steel.

CERN and Ars Electronica launch open call for the Second Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN

(Geneva and Linz 18 July 2012) CERN and Ars Electronica today launch an open call for artists working in the digital domain to apply for the second Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN . The winner will receive a fully-funded residency at CERN and Ars Electronica to create new dimensions in their artistic practice by encounters with the world of science. Summer Camps at the Ars Electronica Center Linz

At the Summer Camp on three consecutive mornings, kids can learn to compose their own tracks in a pro-quality sound studio, breathe life into machines they construct themselves, and perform fascinating experiments with electronic circuits.

Impetus and Movement

(Berlin / Linz, July 12, 2012) The third exhibition produced jointly by Volkswagen and Ars Electronica opens on Thursday, July 12, 2012. “Impetus and Movement” is the show’s title; Automobil Forum Unter den Linden reprises as the venue. Here, artists from Europe, the USA and Japan have created mises-en-scène for deliveries of an impulse and the processes launched thereby as means of scrutinizing the tension and interplay between self-determination and disenfranchisement. The spectrum of their works includes subversive strategies for asserting a claim to a presence in the public sphere, unconventional methods of seeing the world though another’s eyes, and nonsensical machines designed to carry out simple tasks in as complicated a way as possible. “Impetus and Movement” runs through Sunday, September 16, 2012. Admission is free of charge.

But these so-called apps aren’t just a great source of help for such tasks as getting a local weather forecast, navigating strange neighborhoods or translating an exotic menu. Deep Space LIVE: Dancing under the Stars

(Linz, July 3, 2012) You can behold the wonders of astronomy and hear the Music of the Spheres this Thursday, July 5, 2012 in Deep Space LIVE. Visitors are in for a real treat from 8 to 9 PM, when astrophotographer Dietmar Hager presents brand-new images from the European Southern Observatory and takes his audience on a 3D journey to the center of the Milky Way and areas where the stars of the future are being born. (Linz, July 2, 2012) Wilhering and Linz seek to jointly host the Province Garden Show in 2019. “Wilhering and Linz are broaching the issue of their relationship and reconfiguring how they interact as neighbors. In doing so, the accent is on the role of the Danube as the region’s main artery. With the Province Garden Show, we’re linking tradition to innovation, and imparting fresh momentum that opens up long-term opportunities,” explained Wilhering Mayor Mario Mühlböck.

Ars Electronica 2012 Interim Results

(Linz, July 1, 2012) At the conclusion of the first half of 2012, Ars Electronica Linz GmbH is pleased to report excellent year-to-date results. Two particularly notable bright spots are the project revenues generated by the Ars Electronica Futurelab and AE Solutions. “For the current year, we’re projecting 70% higher revenues from these two divisions. In other words, we’re now estimating gross revenues from projects at €5.9 million,” said a delighted Diethard Schwarzmair. With a total of 74,500 visitors thus far in 2012, the Ars Electronica Center is maintaining last year’s record pace. And work is underway on the next big attractions: the voestalpine Klangwolke at the end of August and the Ars Electronica Festival in early September. Preparations have already been wrapped up for the “Impetus and Movement” exhibition opening on July 11 at Automobil Forum Unter den Linden in Berlin.

(Linz, June 29, 2012) Shortly before schools close for summer break here, crowds have been storming the Ars Electronica Center. This past Tuesday alone, attendance at the Museum of the Future was 1,221. Reservations for upcoming dates have been pouring in as well. During summer vacation, the AEC is offering a wide-ranging program for young and old alike.

Science Days: Out of Control

(Linz, June 15, 2012) At Science Days on June 16-17, 2012, specialists from the Department of Secure Information Systems at the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences’ Hagenberg Campus will show what information about users is being gathered in conjunction with telecommunications data retention, how users can protect their Smartphone from incursions by undesirables, and how to restore purportedly lost computer information. "ZeitRaum" at Vienna International Airport’s New Terminal

(Linz / Vienna, June 6, 2012) “ZeitRaum” (TimeSpace) is an interactive art installation the Ars Electronica Futurelab designed for the new terminal at Vienna International Airport. It creates real-time interpretations of arriving and departing flights. “ZeitRaum” consists of a series of stations that accompany departing passengers on their way to their gates. The airport authority will also be using the installation for half of the available time as an ad medium.

Long Night of the Stages at the Ars Electronica Center

This is place to go to create illuminated letters of the alphabet for the voestalpine Klangwolke on September 1. The Klangwolke Werkstatt is open whenever the AEC is. Admission is free of charge, and so are the construction materials.

Deep Space LIVE: Linz 1933 - 1945

(Linz, May 28, 2012) Previously unreleased images of Linz between 1933 and 1945 will be on display at the next Deep Space LIVE on Thursday, May 31. Walter Schuster, director of the Archive of the City of Linz, will speak about the time from the beginning of the Civil War until the end of World War II and illustrate his talk with large-format historical photographs. Among the motifs: stew being dispensed to the needy on Hauptplatz, construction of the new Nibelungen Bridge, and a model of the Opera Square and Boulevard the Nazis were planning to build.

(Linz, May 24, 2012) It’s time for Family Days at the Ars Electronica Center once again this weekend. May 26-27 from 10 AM to 6 PM, we’re hosting a full lineup of events including tours designed with families in mind. Youngsters—and their chaperones too—can take part in a Puzzle Rallye that gets across lots of cool stuff about the Ars Electronica Center. (Linz, May 21, 2012) The Israeli-Palestinian conflict will occupy the focal point at the next Deep Space LIVE this Thursday, May 24. Stefan Schwarzmair, a member of the Ars Electronica Center staff, will talk about his experiences and impressions gained during two stints as a volunteer for Palestinian aid organizations on the West Bank. He’ll tell about living and working with Palestinians amidst walls, barbed wire and checkpoints.

VISUAL SOUND TOUR – The Linz Sinfonietta

(Linz, May 17, 2012) “VISUAL SOUND TOUR – The Linz Sinfonietta” will be the Linz Music School’s third guest appearance at the Ars Electronica Center. On Monday, May 21 at 7 PM, student musicians under the direction of Petra Wurz and Marco Palewicz will perform amidst spectacular high-definition graphics in Deep Space. The focus, both musically and visually, will be on the City of Linz itself. All the works were written by Linz musicians; the projected images are provided by the Municipal Archive and nature filmmaker Erich Pröll. There’ll also be an exhibit of stencil graffiti photographed around town. Admission is free.

New SoundLab in the Ars Electronica Center

(Linz, May 16. 2012) The Ars Electronica Center’s brand new SoundLab makes its debut on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 7 PM. It’s a setting for five sound installations, and also features a fully functional sound studio including six workstations equipped with audio software for recording, remixing and producing. On the opening night lineup are a live jam and workshops designed to give an impression of the amazing possibilities available to visitors. Over the coming weeks, the SoundLab will be dedicated to preparations for the upcoming voestalpine Klangwolke and production of Klangwolke Miniatures.

Science Days: Images of the Brain

(Linz, May 11, 2012) The next Science Days at the Ars Electronica Center will showcase “Images of the Brain.” Throughout the weekend (May 12-13), the BrainLab will focus on images and our perception of them. Visitors can look forward to learning lots of interesting stuff about optical illusions, and they’ll have the opportunity to watch Linz artists Katharina Klaczak, Ursula Hübner, Peter Sommerauer, Ingrid Tragler, Alexander Jöchl and Veronika Merl paint pictures using only the power of their thoughts. Visitors can also get hooked up to a brain-computer interface and try out “brain painting” for themselves.

TECHNO LOG 12: Interface Human – Challenge Machine

(Linz, May 10, 2012) TECHNO LOG 12 is set for Monday, May 21 at the Ars Electronica Center. “Interface Human – Challenge Machine” is the theme of this one-day in-depth conference. Kicking things off will be keynote speeches by two internationally renowned experts: Dr. Ulrich Eberl, director of innovation communication at Siemens AG, Munich, and Prof. Peter Purkathofer, director of the UID Lab at the Department of Information Science at Vienna University of Technology. LINZ CHANGES Exhibition Tent Drew Big Crowds

(Linz, May 7, 2012) Back by popular demand, the LINZ CHANGES exhibition tent made its third appearance at the Urfahr Fair from April 28 to May 6 and got a tremendous reception once again this year. Lots of folks took advantage of the opportunity to enjoy this creative and entertaining presentation of the City of Linz and all it has to offer. An audience favorite was the “Finger Marathon” in which guests could use tablet computers to let their fingers do the running over a stretch of Linz’s biggest race. Other very popular attractions were the 16-meter-long panorama wall featuring high-definition photos of the cityscape, the 150-m2 aerial view of Linz laid out on the tent’s floor, and the “Views” installation with its historical postcards and interactive table offering an excursion into the city’s past.

Exhibition Opening: Pingo ergo sum

(Linz, April 3, 2012) “Pingo ergo sum” (I paint; therefore, I am) is the new exhibition running at the Ars Electronica Center from April 6 to May 27. It features the art of brain painting whereby people can render pictures without using their hands, a keyboard or a mouse. A brain-computer interface (BCI) registers the painter’s brainwaves and transmits them to a computer. By using only the power of his/her own thoughts, the painter can select from among a wide array of brushes, forms and colors and use them to paint pictures. At the exhibition opening on Thursday, April 5 in Deep Space at the Ars Electronica Center, Adi Hoesle (DE) will create just such a brain painting. There will also be a live remote hookup to Kunsthalle Rostock, where brain painting has been the center of attention for a week already. Audience members assembled in Deep Space at the AEC will be able to observe a live demonstration of brain painting in Rostock by a woman suffering from locked-in syndrome.

Interaktiv-kreativ-Tage in den Osterferien

(Deutsch) (Linz, 2.4.2012) Die Interaktiv-kreativ-Tage im Ars Electronica Center versprechen in den Osterferien abwechslungsreiche Unterhaltung. Dienstag, 3. April, werden auf einem Zeichencomputer fantastische Kreaturen entworfen, die mit Hilfe eines Lasercutters in richtige Papierwesen verwandelt werden können, während bei PicoCricket ein kleiner Computer zum hupenden Fahrzeug oder zu einer leuchtenden Blume umprogrammiert und verändert werden kann. NEXTCOMIC Festival 2012 at the Ars Electronica Center

(Linz, March 14, 2012) The 2012 NEXTCOMIC Festival is the featured event at the Ars Electronica Center March 15-23. The lineup includes a gameplay performance with a pirate sea battle theme, drawing comics for the whole family, and a computer game corner sponsored by the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences’ Hagenberg Campus. On Thursday, March 15, Deep Space LIVE will host the premiere of Mangarium Reloaded, a 3-D comic world designed by the Austrian Association of Illustrators that visualizes the Alpine Republic flooded in the wake of climate change.

CERN welcomes its first artist in residence

(Linz, Geneva, 13.3.2012) Creative collisions have begun at CERN with the arrival of Julius von Bismarck as the laboratory’s first Collide@CERN artist in residence. A rising star of the international arts scene, von Bismarck will team up with theoretical physicist James Wells as he works alongside the lab’s engineers and scientists for the next two months before moving to the Ars Electronica Futurelab in Linz, Austria for the second part of his residency. Von Bismarck and Wells will give a public presentation in CERN’s Globe of Science and Innovation on 21 March. Doors open at 18:45.

Deep Space LIVE: Astrophotography

(Linz, February 27, 2012) The focus is on astrophotography at the next Deep Space LIVE on Thursday, March 1, 2012. A documentary by internationally renowned, prizewinning filmmaker Erich Pröll takes a behind-the-scenes look at astrophotographer Dietmar Hager’s observatory in Upper Austria’s Mühlviertel region. And all those who’d like to take their own pictures of the starry night sky can get some practical instruction that shows just how easy it is even with not very sophisticated equipment. And as a follow-up on March 8 at 6:30 PM, Hager will hold a workshop to show you how use various computer programs to process your stellar imagery.

Deep Space LIVE: Best of Linz in 3D

(Linz, February 22, 2012) The Archive of the City of Linz will present a nostalgic pictorial tour of Linz in 1900 at the next Deep Space LIVE event this coming Thursday, February 23, 2012. Never-before-exhibited stereographic 3D images make the Linz of yesteryear come alive. Motifs include buildings torn down long ago, popular outing destinations in bygone days, and impressions of how everyday life used to be in Linz. Serving as tour guide will be Walter Schuster, director of the Archive of the City of Linz. ATTENTION: Due to the many reservations we’ve already received, we’ll be presenting two showings in succession. Tickets are still available only for the presentation at 8:30 PM.

Interactive-Creative Days during Semester Break

(Linz, February 16, 2012) Interactive-Creative Days at the Ars Electronica Center are a great way to keep from getting a case of the semester break blues. On Tuesday, February 21, you can learn how to design fantastic creatures on a drawing computer, and then use a laser cutter to turn them into real paper figures. At “Everybody into the Lab!” you’ll learn to clone plants and to isolate your own DNA from the skin inside your mouth. On Thursday, February 23, the Microcosmonauts workshop will provide startling insights into the wonderful world of the microcosm. Running simultaneously is NeXT Toprobot, a look at how robots perceive their environment and react to it.

Family Days at the Ars Electronica Center Linz

(Linz, February 14, 2012) The next installment of Family Days is set for Saturday and Sunday, February 18 & 19, 2012 at the Ars Electronica Center. From 10 AM to 6 PM, there’ll be guided tours designed with families in mind. In a Puzzle Rallye, young and old can learn lots of interesting things about the Ars Electronica Center. And Deep Space will be the setting for a play geared to get young audience members mentally and physically active as two game pieces go on an adventure within a board game.

Deep Space LIVE: The Art of FLIGHT

(Linz, February 13, 2012) Full-tilt snowboard action is on tap at the next Deep Space LIVE on Thursday, February 16, 2012. The film “The Art of FLIGHT” features snowboard legend Travis Rice and other top international riders on slopes that no snowboarder has ever ridden before. State-of-the-art filmmaking equipment—some of it developed expressly for “The Art of FLIGHT”—provides incredible high-definition images. This Curt Morgan film was produced by Red Bull Media House in cooperation with Brain Farm Digital Cinema.

Science Days: Brain Research

(Linz, February 9, 2012) The 2nd Science Days event at the Ars Electronica Center this coming weekend will be all about research on the brain. The venue, appropriately enough, is the in-house BrainLab, where visitors can steer robots and write words solely with their thoughts, and find out why certain optical illusions just fool adults and not kids.

Brains for Everybody Lecture Series: How Wine Goes to Your Head

(Linz, February 8, 2012) On Thursday, February 9, 2012, Manuela Macedonia, a neuroscientist at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, will talk about wine and the human brain. A wine tasting will provide a pleasant setting for visitors to find out how imbibing alcohol effects our perceptive faculties and our emotions, what happens in the brain when we enjoy a sip of wine, and why the superb red you had on your last vacation tastes so lousy when you get it home.

Deep Space LIVE: Mount St. Helens – The Volcano is Active

(Linz, February 7, 2012) Spirit Lake, which was decimated by the powerful eruption of the Mount St. Helens volcano on May 18, 1980, is the featured attraction at the next Deep Space LIVE this Thursday, February 9. To shoot this documentary for Universum, the nature series on Austrian TV, Erich Pröll revisited this area 30 years after the catastrophe and became the first filmmaker to dive Spirit Lake and shoot underwater footage there. In Deep Space at the Ars Electronica Center, Pröll will provide interesting background about the volcano, show a clip from his Universum episode, and give a behind-the-scenes look at work on the set.

For Seniors: Of Humans and Machines

(Linz, February 1, 2012) Every first and third Friday of the month, the Ars Electronica Center offers a themed tour custom-tailored to seniors. The guides make a concerted effort to dispense with English-language high-tech jargon, and to allow plenty of time for tour group members to pose questions and to discuss their experiences and impressions. On tap on February 3 & 17 will be human-machine encounters in the AEC’s own RoboLab. Then, it’s on to the “What Machines Dream Of” exhibition that features devices of astonishing beauty in which rationality and perfection were nowhere near the top of the design agenda.

(Linz, January 27, 2012) Following up on its successful debut in February 2011 that drew 1,270 youngsters to the Ars Electronica Center in only 28 days, the KET – Kids Experience Technology traveling exhibition is returning for an encore presentation running January 31 to March 4. The show gives 4-8-year-olds the opportunity to playfully explore scientific phenomena and technological applications.

The Ars Electronica Center is putting its best foot forward as a rewarding destination for family outings. Sim Linz, an urban & geographic information system, enables visitors to the AEC’s installation to enjoy interesting and unusual views of Upper Austria’s capital; Linz Sights presents historic images of the city; and Shadowgram gives guests an opportunity to express their dreams and ideas having to do with travel.

Deep Space LIVE: Linz_Then&Now II

(Linz, January 23, 2011) The history of the City of Linz will once again be the theme of a Deep Space LIVE series staged by the Ars Electronica Center in cooperation with the Archive of the City of Linz. The historical images not only offer visitors fascinating views of Linz in bygone days; high-definition visuals for which Deep Space is famous also reveal details that can’t be seen using conventional display techniques. At each presentation, a guest speaker will be on hand to provide expert commentary. On January 26, Linz_Then&Now II will spotlight architectural changes to the Linz cityscape in the 19th and 20th centuries. Moderators are Fritz Mayrhofer and Annelise Schweiger of the Archive of the City of Linz.

AE Solutions Shadowgram Makes a Statement at actb 2012

FamilyDays at Ars Electronica Center Linz

(Linz, January 18, 2012) It’s time for Family Days at the Ars Electronica Center once again this weekend. January 21-22 from 10 AM to 6 PM, we’re hosting a full lineup of events including tours designed with families in mind. Youngsters—and their chaperones too—can take part in a Puzzle Rallye that gets across lots of cool stuff about the Ars Electronica Center. In Deep Space, the Linz dance theater Helix presents “The King’s Last Move,” a detective story/dance piece for kids age 5 and up.
